What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy (OT) supports individuals in achieving their personal goals and improving their quality of life by developing, maintaining, or regaining essential skills for daily living.

At ‘It’s More Than Therapy’, we provide a range of OT services tailored to each person’s needs, including:
  • Individual Therapy Sessions: Personalised, one-on-one therapy to address specific goals, available in our clinic or community settings.
  • Functional Capacity Assessments: Evaluations to identify the obstacles keeping you from your goals and to recommend what funding and support will help you overcome them.
  • Supported Independent Living (SIL) Assessments: Assessments to help guide and support living arrangements that foster independence.
  • Assistive Technology & Equipment Prescriptions: Recommendations for tools and equipment that enhance independence and daily functioning.
  • Home Modification Prescriptions: Guidance on adapting home environments to improve safety, accessibility, and functionality.
  • OT-Based Programs: Group programs designed to address specific goals, such as motor skills, sensory processing, and emotional regulation. These programs are run less frequently and offer opportunities for targeted skill development.

Fully Equiped Clinic

Our large, fully-equipped clinic offers unique benefits for individual therapy, such as access to specialised equipment and a structured, consistent environment. This setting can help individuals achieve specific goals more effectively than in community-based settings.

Whether you’re seeking support for a child or an adult, our OT services are designed to help you achieve your personal goals and live a more fulfilling life.

Our Approach

Our one-on-one therapy sessions are tailored to your specific goals and needs. Delivered in our large, fully-equipped clinic or in the community, these sessions provide the focused support needed to help you achieve meaningful outcomes.
We use evidence-based practices to ensure the highest quality of care and effective outcomes. Our therapy is also grounded in neuro-affirming principles, recognising and respecting each individual’s unique strengths and experiences.
Our clinic offers access to specialised equipment and a structured environment that enhances the effectiveness of therapy.
The clinic is particularly beneficial for our paediatric clients, providing resources that support:
  • Motor Skill Development: Improving coordination, strength, and balance through focused activities.
  • Emotional Regulation: Learning strategies to recognise and manage emotions effectively.
  • Sensory Integration: Building tolerance and adaptability to sensory input to enhance participation in daily activities.
  • Social Confidence: Developing confidence in social interactions and building positive relationships in an authentic way.
  • Self-Esteem & Resilience: Empowering children to overcome challenges and embrace new opportunities.

Esmie Human

Senior Paediatric Occupational Therapist

Esmie Human moved to Australia with her family after spending several wonderful years living and working in New Zealand. She is excited to embrace the sunshine and outdoor lifestyle, and continues to bring her passion for helping children thrive through meaningful, play-based learning.

Esmie loves exploring the world through the eyes of her two boys, Sean  and Rudi, who inspire her daily both personally and professionally. She believes that a family-centred approach is essential to the success of therapy, working in partnership with families to unlock each child’s unique potential.

Esmie completed her Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy in 2005 at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. After gaining early experience in a paediatric private practice, she developed a deep interest in sensory integration therapy and later completed a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (Neurological and Developmental Disorders) in 2013.

Since then, Esmie has worked extensively in sensory and developmental paediatrics, supporting children across a wide range of ages and abilities. She is passionate about helping children engage in learning using all their senses and creating playful, positive experiences that build confidence and independence. Esmie has been working in the pediatric field for over 20 years and working with babies to teenagers.

Esmie continues to nurture her professional curiosity and one day hopes to complete her doctorate in paediatric occupational therapy.
